Green initiatives are highly popular in our personal and professional lives. When we decide to make changes to our processes, are we truly finding the best solution? Are we assessing all of the factors and potentially unintended consequences?
Many businesses adopt Green strategies as part of their business plan in an effort to be good stewards of the environment and their community. No one can argue that this is not a good thing to do. However, often these efforts can become a silo activity relative to other organizational initiatives, resulting in a significant negative impact to the corporate financials. Because of the economic implication, this approach for implementing Green could jeopardize future environmental-improvement efforts.
In the IEE system, Green metrics and their improvement efforts can be coordinated with other organization metrics through its Value Chain. In the IEE system, Green efforts should be used to drive business success in measurable ways.
- Green target areas are selected by those that would also benefit the business, not based on strategies that are based on intuition or emotion.
- Baseline the business performance to assess the impact of any changes that are implemented to achieve Green and business goals.
